St. Thomas is the gateway to the US Virgin Islands — a lush, hilly island ringed by some of the most beautiful bays in the Caribbean. Charlotte Amalie is one of the best duty-free shopping ports in the world, Magens Bay is consistently ranked among the world's best beaches, and the sailing out of Red Hook puts the entire USVI and BVI within reach.

Beaches & Water

Magens Bay is the crown jewel — a mile-long arc of calm, protected water consistently ranked among the world's best beaches. Coki Beach on the northeast shore is the snorkeling hub, with reefs just steps from the sand and sea turtles gliding past. Secret Harbour on the east end is a quieter alternative with excellent snorkeling. For sailing, Red Hook Marina is the launching point for day trips to St. John's pristine national park beaches.

Food & Drink

Charlotte Amalie's restaurant scene punches well above its size. Virgilio's in the alley off Main Street is the local fine-dining institution — Italian-Caribbean fusion in a candlelit stone building. Gladys' Café on Back Street is the spot for authentic Virgin Islands breakfast: saltfish, fungi, and johnnycake. Duffy's Love Shack at Red Hook is the classic beach bar with frozen drinks and a party atmosphere. The waterfront at Frenchtown has several excellent seafood spots.

Nightlife & Vibes

St. Thomas has the most active nightlife in the USVI. Frenchtown is the local bar district — Al Cohen's and Epernay Wine Bar draw a mix of locals and visitors. The Greenhouse on the waterfront is a classic tourist bar with live music most nights. Red Hook has a lively marina bar scene. For something more local, the Carnival Village during April's Carnival is an experience unlike anything else in the Caribbean.

Excursions

The ferry to St. John takes 20 minutes from Red Hook and opens up the Virgin Islands National Park — Trunk Bay's underwater snorkel trail is one of the most famous in the Caribbean. Day sails to the British Virgin Islands (Jost Van Dyke, Tortola, Virgin Gorda) are popular and easy to arrange. Coral World Ocean Park at Coki Beach has an underwater observatory and sea turtle encounters. The aerial tram to Paradise Point gives a panoramic view of Charlotte Amalie harbor.

Local Life

Charlotte Amalie is one of the best duty-free shopping ports in the world — Main Street is lined with jewelry, watches, and liquor at prices well below stateside. The 99 Steps (actually 103) lead up from the waterfront to Blackbeard's Castle, a historic watchtower with harbor views. Fort Christian, built in 1672, is the oldest standing structure in the USVI. The Carnival celebration in April is the cultural heart of the island — steel pan, mocko jumbies, and elaborate costumes fill the streets.
