San Pedro on Ambergris Caye is the most popular destination in Belize — a colorful, laid-back town on the world's second-largest barrier reef. Golf carts outnumber cars, Hol Chan Marine Reserve puts you face-to-face with nurse sharks and rays in water you can stand in, and the Great Blue Hole is a day trip away.

Beaches & Water

San Pedro sits on Ambergris Caye, separated from the Belize Barrier Reef — the second-largest in the world — by a shallow lagoon. Hol Chan Marine Reserve just south of town is one of the most biodiverse snorkel sites in the Caribbean: nurse sharks, stingrays, sea turtles, and massive schools of fish in water you can stand in. Shark Ray Alley within Hol Chan is the famous spot where you can snorkel with dozens of nurse sharks and southern stingrays. The beaches in town are narrow but the water is calm and clear; head north toward Mata Chica for wider, quieter stretches.

Food & Drink

Elvi's Kitchen is the San Pedro institution — open since 1974, serving Belizean classics like stewed chicken, rice and beans, and fresh fish in an open-air palapa. Wild Mango's on the beach is the go-to for creative Caribbean cuisine and excellent cocktails. The Lazy Croc BBQ is beloved for smoked meats and cold Belikin beer. For local breakfast, the market stalls near the water taxi dock serve fry jacks (fried dough) with eggs and beans — the Belizean morning staple. Rum punch at any beach bar is mandatory.

Nightlife & Vibes

San Pedro has the most active nightlife in Belize. Jaguar's Temple Club on the beach is the main dance venue. Wahoo's Lounge is the classic sports bar. The Tackle Box Bar over the water is a beloved sunset spot. Wednesday night beach parties at Palapa Bar are a San Pedro tradition. The golf cart is the vehicle of choice — no cars on the main streets — which gives the whole town a festive, open-air feel even on a Tuesday night.

Excursions

The Great Blue Hole — a 1,000-foot wide, 400-foot deep underwater sinkhole — is one of the world's top dive sites and accessible by day trip from San Pedro. Lamanai, a spectacular Maya ruin site on the New River, is a full-day boat trip through jungle and wildlife. Bacalar Chico National Park on the northern tip of Ambergris Caye has pristine reef, manatees, and howler monkeys. Crocodile spotting tours at night in the lagoon are surprisingly thrilling. Fly fishing for permit and bonefish on the flats is world-class.

Local Life

San Pedro was a quiet fishing village until the 1980s — the novel and film The Mosquito Coast was partly inspired by this coast. Today it's Belize's most visited destination, but the local Belizean-Mestizo culture is still very much present. The San Pedro Carnival in February is a colorful celebration with music, costumes, and street food. The town's main street (Barrier Reef Drive) is a mix of dive shops, restaurants, and souvenir stalls — all navigated by golf cart. The annual Lobster Fest in June celebrates the opening of lobster season with cooking competitions and beach parties.
