Roatán is the largest of Honduras's Bay Islands and one of the best value diving destinations in the Caribbean. The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef runs right along the island's shore, West Bay Beach has reef you can snorkel from the sand, and West End Village is a classic Caribbean beach town with great food, cold beers, and a genuinely relaxed vibe.

Beaches & Water

West Bay Beach is Roatán's showpiece — a half-mile of white sand with the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef just 20 yards offshore, making it one of the most accessible reef snorkel spots in the world. West End Beach is the social hub, lined with dive shops and beach bars. Half Moon Bay between West End and West Bay is a sheltered cove perfect for calm-water swimming. The reef wall off the north shore drops to over 100 feet and is world-class for diving — sites like Mary's Place (a dramatic crack in the reef wall) and Spooky Channel are legendary.

Food & Drink

West End Village is the dining hub — a single sandy lane lined with restaurants, bars, and dive shops. Sundowners Bar & Grill is the classic West End spot for fresh fish and cold Salva Vida beer. Cannibal Café is beloved for burritos and smoothies. Bite on the Beach does excellent wood-fired pizza on the water. For local Honduran food, the comedores (small local restaurants) in Coxen Hole serve baleadas (flour tortillas with beans, cheese, and cream) and fresh seafood at local prices. The Sunday BBQ at Roatán Brewing Company is a community institution.

Nightlife & Vibes

West End is the nightlife center — small, walkable, and lively without being overwhelming. Sundowners is the classic sundowner spot with live music some nights. Foster's Bar is the dive bar institution. Roatán Brewing Company has excellent craft beer and a relaxed vibe. The Twisted Toucan in West Bay has a more resort-style bar scene. The vibe across Roatán is relaxed and friendly — this is not a party island in the Cancún sense, but there's always something going on in West End on a weekend night.

Excursions

Zip-lining through the jungle canopy at Gumbalimba Park or Zip Honduras is a Roatán staple — some lines run directly over the beach and reef. The Roatán Institute for Marine Sciences at Anthony's Key Resort offers dolphin encounters and a marine museum. Kayaking the mangrove channels on the east end of the island is peaceful and wildlife-rich. Day trips to the smaller Bay Islands — Utila and Guanaja — are possible by ferry. The Carambola Botanical Gardens in Sandy Bay has beautiful jungle trails and a butterfly garden.

Local Life

Roatán has a unique cultural mix — the Bay Islands were a British colony until 1859, and the island's Afro-Caribbean community (Bay Islanders) speaks English and has distinct traditions from mainland Honduras. The Garifuna community on the east end of the island has its own language, music (punta), and food traditions. Punta Gorda is the oldest Garifuna settlement in Honduras and hosts a vibrant Garifuna Settlement Day celebration in April. The contrast between the tourist West End and the local Honduran communities in Coxen Hole is striking and worth exploring.
