Andros is the largest island in the Bahamas and the least explored. It has the third-largest barrier reef in the world, hundreds of inland blue holes, and the best bonefishing on earth. If you want the Bahamas without the crowds, Andros is your island.

Beaches & Water

The west coast of Andros has miles of deserted beaches with almost no development. The barrier reef runs 140 miles along the east coast — the wall drops from 6 feet to 6,000 feet in a matter of yards. The blue holes of Andros — both inland and ocean — are among the most spectacular dive sites in the world.

Food & Drinks

Andros is not a foodie destination — it's a wilderness destination. Small settlements have local restaurants serving fresh fish, peas and rice, and johnnycake. The Small Hope Bay Lodge near Fresh Creek is the best dining on the island and has a legendary rum punch.

Nightlife & Vibes

Andros is quiet — the nightlife is stargazing, bonfire on the beach, and storytelling. The Small Hope Bay Lodge has a lively bar scene with guests from around the world. Local rake-and-scrape music can be found at community events and festivals.

Excursions

Bonefishing on the Andros flats is world-famous — the shallow tidal flats are the most productive bonefish habitat on earth. Diving the Andros Barrier Reef and the blue holes is extraordinary. The AUTEC (Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center) is a US Navy facility on the island — the surrounding waters are restricted but the area adds to Andros's mysterious reputation.

Local Life

Andros is home to the Chickcharnie — a mythical creature said to be a three-toed, red-eyed owl that brings bad luck to those who disrespect it. The island has a strong tradition of batik fabric-making — Androsia batik from Small Hope Bay is sold across the Bahamas. The annual Crab Fest in Fresh Creek celebrates the land crab harvest with music, food, and dancing.
